Unity Sand Ceremony Vows
The Unity Sand Ceremony is symbolic of the joining of two lives. The Sand Ceremony is a modern alternative to the unity candle ceremony and is perfect for an outdoor setting.
Using different colored sands, the bride and groom take turns filling a central unity vase as they recite vows appropriate for the ceremony. The sand colors typically coordinate with the wedding colors but can also be the couple's favorite colors. At the end of the ceremony, the sand-filled unity vase can be placed in a curio cabinet, on a shelf, table or mantel as a reminder of your wedding day and the life you now share.
What will you say during the unity sand ceremony? What unity sand ceremony vows should you use? Here are a couple of suggestions for vows:
Your officiant or a friend could say the following:
Today our bride and groom wish to participate in the sand ceremony. Similar to the unity candle, it indicates the joining of their lives, their hearts and their souls. (Name) and (name), just as these grains of sand can never be separated, our prayer for you today is that your lives together would be longer than the time it would take to separate the individual grains of sand. (You can simply play soft music as you and your new husband slowly pour sand into the middle vase)
Here's another version you may want to have the officiant read:
_______ and _______, you have just sealed your relationship by the giving and receiving of rings and the exchange of a kiss, and this covenant is a relationship pledge between two people who agree that they will commit themselves to one another throughout their lives. The most beautiful example of this partnership is the marriage relationship. You have committed here today to share the rest of your lives with each other. Today, this relationship is symbolized through the pouring of these two individual containers of sand one, representing you, _______ and all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, and the other representing you, _______, and all that you were and all that you are, and all that you will ever be. As these two containers of sand are poured into the third container, the individual containers of sand will no longer exist, but will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage be.

How Does the Unity Sand Ceremony Work?
As more couples look for ways to add more romance and sentiment to their wedding celebrations, the unity sand ceremony provides the perfect opportunity to do this while creating a personalized keepsake of the day.
STEPS OF THE UNITY SAND CEREMONY
Depending on the number of participants in your sand ceremony (especially in the case of a blended family ceremony), the pouring sequence will vary.
STEPS OF THE UNITY SAND CEREMONY
Depending on the number of participants in your sand ceremony (especially in the case of a blended family ceremony), the pouring sequence will vary.
- Prior to the sand ceremony, pre-fill the pouring vases with the different sand colors (leaving the central vase empty). Place all vases on a small table set up for performing the ceremony.
- The steps involved in your particular sand ceremony will depend on the number of participants and the vows that you write. In the diagram below, there are three participants: the bride, the groom, and either the officiant or a family member.
- The small heart pouring vase holds white sand which is then poured into the central vase by the officiant while he/she recites a customized reading that explains the symbolism of the ceremony.
- The bride then pours blue sand into the central vase while reciting vows. The amount of sand she pours depends on the length of the vows. If the bride takes one turn in reciting, she would pour approximately half of her sand into the vase the first time (saving the remainder of her sand for the simultaneous pour).
- The groom then pours green sand into the central vase while reciting vows. The amount of sand he pours depends on the length of the vows. If the groom takes one turn in reciting, he would pour approximately half of his sand into the vase the first time (saving the remainder of his sand for the simultaneous pour).
- To achieve a layered effect, it's recommended that the bride and groom each pour 1/3 of the sand from their respective vases (taking two turns each) then pour the remaining 1/3 into the central vase simultaneously. The blending of the sand colors represents the blending of the individual lives into one.
- After the ceremony is completed, place a stopper in the central vase to create a beautiful keepsake to display in your home and remind you of your heartfelt ceremony and the life that you now share. The pouring vases can now be filled with fresh flowers and enjoyed in your home.

Where There Is Love: Navy Seal Proposes To GirlfriendDuring "When In Rome" Premiere
As a hopeless romantic, I totally love this story and it is just in time for Valentine’s season. Robbins Brothers, The Engagement Ring Store™, gave a lucky couple an unforgettable experience tonight: a one-of-a-kind surprise marriage proposal on the red carpet at the Hollywood movie premiere of the Touchstone Pictures’ "When in Rome."
The groom-to-be is Chad Williams, 25, a U.S. Navy SEAL from Huntington Beach, CA. Chad proposed to his girlfriend of seven years, Aubrey O’Boyle, 23, in front of the assembled national and international media at the premiere of Disney’s new date-night movie.
Stunned but overjoyed, Aubrey answered “yes” – and is currently wearing a one-carat, round brilliant cut Scott Kay diamond engagement ring Chad bought for her at Robbins Brothers’ Mission Viejo store. The retailer will be giving Chad and Aubrey a gift certificate towards wedding bands in celebration of their upcoming wedding day.
Coincidentally, Chad and Aubrey first met at Disneyland – standing in line for Space Mountain. The couple has built a lasting relationship despite Chad’s various deployments around the globe. Now that his contracted time with the military is coming to a close, Chad wanted to take the next step with Aubrey. He went to his local Robbins Brothers store location to shop for a diamond engagement ring, and the rest is Hollywood history.
Enter the Robbins Brothers' "Romantic Wishes - When in Rome" Sweepstakes

What Is a Unity Sand Ceremony?
The unity candle ceremony has been a part of many weddings for years and years. It involves the bride and groom using individual candles to light a unity candle as an expression of the couple's shared commitment to uniting their lives. The unity sand ceremony is the descendant of this traditional ceremony but instead of using a unity candle as the symbol of unification, flowing sand becomes the unifying symbol. The receptacle used to capture the flowing sand then becomes a cherished keepsake and reminder of the couple's commitment.
Since a beach setting provides the perfect backdrop for the sand ceremony, it's hard to imagine a beach wedding that doesn't include it. A beach setting, however, isn't required; more and more couples are opting to include the unity sand ceremony as part of traditional church wedding ceremonies. That being said, if you're planning a beach wedding and wish to incorporate a unity ceremony, a sand ceremony is your best bet. Can you imagine trying to keep unity candles lit amid ocean breezes?
The unity sand ceremony is generally performed immediately after the traditional wedding vows are exchanged so it is not a replacement for traditional vows. It's still important, however, to check with your place of worship to ensure that the sand ceremony can be incorporated into your ceremony.
Its Origins
The origins of the unity sand ceremony are questionable. Some have credited Native Americans for this lovely expression of commitment while others claim it has Hawaiian origins. Maybe it's because sand ceremony vows often have elements of Native American or Hawaiian influence. Likely because of Hawaii's connection to the sand ceremony and its breathtakingly beautiful vistas, Hawaiian beaches are popular venues for weddings including the sand ceremony.
Whatever the origins, the popularity of the unity sand ceremony skyrocketed after it was performed during the 2004 wedding of The Bachelorette star Trista Rhen and Ryan Sutter. Over 25 million TV viewers witnessed the performance of the ceremony and since then, interest in the sand ceremony has grown beyond measure.
Its Symbolism
Like its predecessor, the unity candle ceremony, the unity sand ceremony serves to represent the blending of the individuals' lives into one. The blending of the sand inside the unity vase is the visual representation of coming together as one. Some couples choose to leave a bit of sand in their individual pouring vases to affirm that although they are becoming one as a couple, they are still individuals with independent thoughts.
If family members and children will participate in the sand ceremony, the pouring of each individual's sand affirms that each is committed to functioning as one family unit. For blended families, the sand ceremony provides an ideal opportunity for all members to feel they're an important part of the proceedings and the newly-formed family. Children especially love the interactive nature of the ceremony.
What's Needed
The "ingredients" of the unity sand ceremony represent the blending of two into one and together form what will become a lasting keepsake and reminder of your commitment to one another. These ingredients are the unity vase set and the unity sand. The unity vase set that you select should complement your overall wedding theme. Also, keep in mind that you'll want a vase set that you'll love for a long time because it will become a keepsake of your heartfelt ceremony and wedding day. If there will be multiple participants in your unity sand ceremony, you'll want a different sand color for each person.
You will also need a small table to place the unity vase set on. Generally after a couple has exchanged their traditional vows, they will move over to this table and perform the unity sand ceremony, exchanging sand ceremony vows while pouring sand from their individual pouring vases into the central vase.

Unity Sand
After you've selected the perfect unity vase set(s) for the style of your wedding and nature of your sand ceremony (bride and groom only, blended family ceremony, etc.), it's time to select the unity sand that will create the effect that you desire. The unity sand ceremony is a touching, romantic presentation to behold but is enhanced by the visual of the beautiful colored sand flowing into the keepsake vase.
Early sand ceremonies involved couples scooping a bit of beach sand from near their feet and pouring it into a vase or other receptacle. Today, couples have the option of using colored sands to create something that is visually stunning and uniquely theirs.
The sand colors chosen often reflect the couple's favorite colors, the wedding colors, the color scheme of their shared home (or room where vases will be displayed), complementary colors or colors that evoke a certain feeling. Ideally, the chosen colors will have enough contrast to result in a well-defined, striated pattern in the vase.
Perfect for the unity sand ceremony, Crystalline Quartz sand is extra-fine and lustrous. It's available in a bevy of colors, so finding just the right colors to carry out your vision should be a cinch.

Family Nesting Sand Set
The family miniature nesting unity sand set is similar in style to the standard nesting vase set. There are two situations for which this set is most appropriate: (1) If your union will create a blended family, this set is ideal for adding additional participants to the unity sand ceremony; (2) If a smaller sand set is desired. It is sold as a 3-piece set which includes three identical curvy vases. Each vase can serve as a pouring vase or if the set is to be used as the main sand ceremony vases, two can act as pouring vases, while one is placed in the center to serve as the filled keepsake vase.
After the wedding, this vase set can also be displayed in the home as a reminder of your ceremony. The pouring vases can be filled with fresh flowers and placed around the filled central vase for an eye-catching display.
The family nesting unity sand set is most often personalized with the first name of each participant. If it is to be used as the main sand ceremony vases, the central vase often bears the wedding date as well.
Each vase in this set will hold approximately 1 bottle of sand. The number of participants in your sand ceremony will determine the amount of sand needed. It's a good idea for each participant to have his/her own sand color. It's okay if there is a bit of sand left in the individual pouring vases after the central vase has been filled.
The objective is to create a layered effect in the central vase and this requires the use of multiple sand colors.

Whether displayed on a coffee table or mantel after the wedding, this vase set will definitely evoke warm memories of your wedding day and the commitment you made to one another. You may wish to select sand colors that complement your home's decorating theme.
This particular vase set is most often personalized with the bride's first name initial on the left pouring vase, the groom's first name initial on the right pouring vase and the central heart vase often contains a three letter monogram (left to right: bride's first name initial, first letter of shared last name, groom's first name initial) and the wedding date. The small heart (accessory) vase can also be personalized with a single initial.
The central heart shaped vase will hold approximately 3 pounds of sand (3 bottles of colored sand from Things Festive). The number of participants in your sand ceremony will determine the amount of sand needed. It's a good idea for each participant to have his/her own sand color. It's okay if there is a bit of sand left in the individual pouring vases after the heart vase has been filled.
The objective is to create a layered effect in the central heart vase and this requires the use of multiple sand colors.
